World Championship

WMC in China 2012

E-mail Print PDF

We have received the official announcement of dates and place of the Third World Mahjong Championship:

25-31 October 2012 in Qianjiang District, Chongqing.

When EMA recently surveyed the interest of European players, 75-100 were interested. The tournament has room for as many as 160 Europeans in the tournament, so it seems that everyone interested can play.

Chongqing landscape

Chongqing is situated in South-West China, south-east of Chengdu where the WMC 2007 took place.

Chongqing is rich on history and culture. In the surrounding area are mountains, caves and rivers. The city's location in the Sichuan Basin causes it to have some 100 foggy days a year, earning it the nick name "capital of fog". October, however, is supposed to be the best season for clear weather.

The district of Qianjiang is about 300 km east of the city of Chongqing.

China was determined to not miss another title and sent a bunch of strong players this time. In the past two OEMC's they found out that the Europeans had catched on and that they needed to 'step up'. And so they did: besides Linghua, 4 more Chinese players ended in the Top 10 (places 4, 6, 7 and 9) and with 85 table points (best 3 players) they also claimed the Country Price. Runner up here was France (78), just before Danmark with 77 points.

EMA congratulates the Dutch Mahjong Association for a virtually flawless World Championship. And to all players we say: thank you too for making the WMC a great happening!
